Vincent Tavernier.

Biography

Vincent TAVERNIER is a French artist-engraver. He firstly studied model-making at the French EDTA Sornas school and then graduated in Fine Art School of Versailles. Vincent was notably trained by Damien Valero who remains one of his main references today. Vincent loves to share his passion, technic and skills with children or adults, carrying out private or group classes in his workshop or within art events. He started his career in 2003 in Paris, moved to Toulon in 2008 where he set up with other local engravers the «encreD’art» collective of artists, the latter aiming at making the engraving technic better known and appreciated to the public . Then he switched to Marseille and set up his own workshop. Further to experimenting art working on different materials, Vincent developed a real passion for the linocut and xylogravure (wood engraving), his favorite processes. This comes notably from his discovery of the « Die Brücke » German art movement and also Emil Nolde’ artworks. Actually linocut and xylogravure, both « relief engraving » methods, gives a major role to the material through edging or cutting (and not only tracing) each specific pattern within the creation process. Linoleum is a souple, docile and malleable material. Wood, to the contrary, is a rugged and more fragile material at the same time. Vincent Tavernier also really enjoys getting a unique artwork each time, due to the very delicate printing step. He draws inspiration from the daily life, telling stories about people on the street, in a bar or at work, or about children playing for instance. He loves focusing on anonymous persons, and precisely gouging linoleum and wood to emphasize characters attitudes or feelings. Finally Vincent Tavernier enjoys very much his clients choosing one print and the corresponding story having an emotional resonance in their own life.
